Potatoes and Sprouts

May 2nd
The day started cloudy and cold so we spent the morning inside.  We started by doing some sprouting, Lissa would like to offer sprouts to our CSA for the first few weeks and she thought we better do some experimenting.  We chose mung beans, alfalfa sprouts, and a lentil mix.  First we put about 2 tablespoons of each into a large jar, then fill the jars 3/4 of the way full.  They need to soak for about 24 hours to loosen up the hard exterior hulls.  The lids were ordered are special for sprouting the have holes in them to allow for draining and airflow.  Each of these will have to be rinsed three times a day for about a week; but at the end of that week we will have lots of delicious sprouts.  You can also do sprouts in large trays, which is how we will have to do it to get the quantity we need for the CSA.  Sprouting kits are pretty inexpensive so if you like sprouts, I highly recommend trying it yourself.  I will also be posting some great recipes for sprouts in the recipes tab...or just sprinkle them on any sandwich or salad.

Now we wait...

The next thing we did was cut potatoes.  Potatoes are very easy to plant; in fact you probably have some potatoes in your cupboard you can plant. We used potatoes that were left over from last years crop, they have been stored in the basement cold cellar all winter.  You want each chunk of potato to have about three eyes, so we cut them in half and some of the bigger ones we quartered.  We will be growing five kinds of potatoes this year, including Yukon Gold, Red Potatoes, Fingerling, Blue Potatoes, and Cranberry Reds.  Once all the potatoes are cut they will need to dry out for at least 24 hours before they are planted...so we wait.
Almost ready to go in the ground
We will be planting potatoes very soon so keep checking back to see there progress...
