April 29th
Tomatoes are finally in the ground! Lissa and I spent a large chunk of the day moving the huge tomato plants from the
small greenhouse into the
2nd hoop house, organizing them by type, color and size. Tomato plants are either determinate meaning they fruit only once or indeterminate meaning they will fruit multiple times in a season. Cherry tomatoes are an example of indeterminate, their fruit is so small it is easy for their fruit to grow. A Bush Goliath tomato is determinate because it takes a lot of time and energy for the plant to fruit and ripen. We will be growing about 7 different kinds of cherry tomatoes and they will be on the far north side of the
hoop house they will be the largest plants, easily reaching the top of the hoop house. We will plant all the indeterminates on the north side and then fill the south with the determinate varieties.

You can see how anxious these plants are to get in the ground. |

Row ready to be planted |

A planted row, the plants look a little sad after transplanting but they will perk back up. |

just about finished... |
I also planted seven more flats of nastertiums, they are beautiful flowers as well as edible. Lissa uses them in planters all around the farm and will take cuttings throughout the summer to add to our salads. We also planted 3 pots of ginger today, this is the first year they have ever tried to grow ginger so it should be interesting to see how it works out.
