Now that all of the tomatoes are in the ground and the have perked up after being transplanted, we need to tie them up. Tying the plants helps promote upward growth and in turn allows more fruit to grow. It is also important to keep the leaves from touching the ground and getting wet because that encourages blight, we will continue to prune the bottoms of the plants to keep good air circulation through the hoop house all summer. A lot of the plants are so tall that they fall over from their own weight, by the time they hit maturity they will be well over 6 feet tall so we will continue to tie them as they grow.
We also planted all the potatoes today. Like I said before they are very easy, dig a six inch deep hole drop about three potato chunks in and then cover. We used a special potato planting tool, you shove it in the dirt throw the potatoes down the shoot and then yank it out and cover the hole with dirt. We planted about 200 potatoes, so the tool really helped. Each one of the potato chunks we planted should produce anywhere from 4 to 8 potatoes...that is a lot of potatoes.
There are quite a few radishes poking through...we couldn't resist picking a few to eat.
